The planned braided ramp from eastbound Interstate 4 to Osceola Parkway will have lanes going over the existing ramps from US 192 to eastbound I-4. This interaction between ramps and roads is referred to as braiding.
The purpose of the new ramp is to eliminate the conflict between cars merging onto eastbound I-4 from US 192 and cars exiting the interstate for Osceola Parkway. These two interchanges are heavily traveled by visitors and employees of the Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts. The planned changes to the ramp will improve highway safety and traffic flow.
FDOT completed the reconstruction of the I-4 and US 192 interchange in September 2007 at a cost of $61 million.
Kelly, Collins & Gentry, Inc., an Orlando-based engineering and planning consulting firm, has been contracted to design the new ramp. Construction bids for the braided ramp are programmed to be received as early as mid 2011. The estimated construction cost is $13 million.
