Project Overview
The design of the future Interstate 4 and Maitland Boulevard Interchange represents the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) commitment to safe and efficient travel throughout Central Florida. Proposed interchange improvements include new and reconfigured I-4 entrance and exit ramps as well as the elimination of some existing traffic signals. Other modifications include:
- Direct access from westbound I-4 to Lake Destiny Drive
- A pedestrian walkway over I-4 south of Maitland Boulevard
- New Maitland Boulevard bridge over Lake Destiny Drive
- New Maitland Boulevard bridge over Keller Road
- Realignment of Keller Road at Maitland Boulevard
- Extension of Lake Lucien Drive to South Keller Road
- Extension of Southhall Lane to South Keller Road
- Storm water drainage improvements
Project Highlights
Drivers on Maitland Boulevard will benefit from the new Maitland Boulevard bridges over Lake Destiny Drive and Keller Road. The realignment of Keller Road will allow FDOT to build a grade-separated interchange with Maitland Boulevard. The resulting junction is called a Single Point Urban Interchange or SPUI.
SPUI’s connect two major roadways and direct traffic by a single set of synchronized traffic lights. They help alleviate congestion by decreasing traffic backups that block interchanges and intersections.
The Maitland Boulevard and Keller Road SPUI will allow continuous thru-traffic on Maitland Boulevard. Keller Road traffic will be able to turn onto Maitland Boulevard in either direction or continue on Keller Road by traveling underneath a new Maitland Boulevard bridge. On Keller Road and underneath the bridge, the SPUI will allow left turns the intersection to occur simultaneously.
Project Timeline
- Design work began in 2003 and is a component of the Downtown Ultimate I-4 design
- Right-of-Way acquisiton is scheduled to begin in 2012, however some advanced right-of-way purchases have already begun
- Construction date: to be determined
